Inspiration and concept direction
Inspiration
& concept direction
First mystical and magical themes and creatures were the
main inspirations for this project but wanted to incorporate a strong theme and
direction for the project. This ‘magical’ board put together on Pinterest to
give some ideas of styling, props, photography and photo editing possible for
the project.
Greek mythology became the final decision for the project
as it can lead to very creative and abstract work. Avant-garde hair stylists
are strong points of inspiration for this project with aspects of abstract hair
and makeup design.
Dark Beauty magazine is also another source of
inspiration for this project because of the aesthetic of the overall look of
the images they produce. However this will depend on the character in the
project and weather this is fitting or not.
The shoots for this project will be a mixture of in
studio and on location depending on which is best fitting for the character.
Props will be used for specific characters as they can be symbolising for some
of the chosen characters. The use of colour used for the hair and makeup for
the characters will be very important when designing for the characters as it
will strongly represent their characteristics. The key descriptive words for
each character which will be the main theme for each shoot are as flowed:
Zeus
– God (male) God of the sky and ruler of the Olympian
gods.
Gordon
sisters (Medusa was most well-known) – Stone (female). The Gorgons were three monsters who
were sisters. Their faces were ugly and
their hair was replaced by snakes; anyone who would gaze into their eyes would
be turned to stone instantly.
Aphrodite
– Desire (female). Goddess of love, desire and beauty.
Athenta – Courage (female).
Goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, the arts and crafts.

found avant-garde hair stylists’ social media accounts which are used to show

Proposal introduction
Project introduction
Mythology is everywhere! Daily you run across instances of words, city
names, companies, literary allusions - and the Zodiac, planets and
constellations - that take their name or borrow their theme from Greek
myths. The world is still fascinated with
Greek mythology though they might not always be able to say why. These stories
may have been written hundreds, if not thousands of years ago, but it is good
to remember they were written by wise men that had a hand in helping shape
modern thinking. The stories are non-fictional however they reveal morals,
philosophies and even warnings about life, often showing between right and
wrong.
There are many Greek influences on today’s society. The Greek
culture affects democracy, the alphabet, libraries, the Olympics, math,
science, architecture and lighthouses. The political system started in Athens as
a Monarch – grew to an Oligarchy and finally became democracy. Originally
the Greek democracy system was not completely fair but has had a huge impact on
modern cultures. The Greeks were the first civilization to use the alphabet
which is now used all over the world with 20 different types of alphabet around
the globe.
The Olympic Games are a perfect example of how Greek mythology impacts
our society today. The Olympics were originally held in honour of Zeus (who is
God of all Gods). The Ptythian games were held in honour of Apollo the god of
the sun. The Isthian games were held in honour of Poseidon who was the God of
the sea. In recent years Olympic Games there have still been reference to Greek
mythology as Olive lead crowns are worn at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Greek mythology has influence on architecture because Ancient Greek came
up with using pillars within building work. Many temples and places of worship,
often places to worship Greek god, are built using pillars to look beautiful.
When Rome took over Greece it adapted its own form of Greek architecture and western
culture also took inspiration from this.
Most importantly Greek mythology has a huge impact on our entertainment
industry. There are many movies which have relevance to mythical creatures and
characters from the original stories. Most popular ones being Hercules, My Fair
Lady, Mightly Aphrodite, The Clash of the Titans and Troy.
Project focus
This project will focus on 6 characters from
Greek Mythology building an online exhibition using wix.com. Each
character will have a theme and I will show this through design, use of hair,
makeup, props, photography and editing. The images will be fashion based with a
touch of editorial, shooting on a mixture of on location and studio
shoots depending on which is more fitting to the character.
The final outcomes should be bold though the hair will be the main focus
of the images, therefore the makeup will not be as strong.
Wig and postiche hair will be widely used
throughout the project with elements of avant-garde to show case my hair
skills. The final images will be daring and revolutionary,
being created using traditional techniques and adjusting them in an unusual way
or creating completely new techniques.
Deciding a name for the exhibition
My unique selling point for this project is showcasing abstract avant-garde hair and makeup design with reference to Greek Mythology which I have not come across in my research.
